There are a total of 19 competitors besides Wolfgang Krauser in this fight.

Fatal Fury Special brings back playable versions of Tung Fu Rue, Cheng Sinzan, Laurence Blood, and Wolfgang Krauser, while the cast of the original Real Bout is unaltered. Geese Howard makes a comeback in this installment, even though he was canonically killed off in his own KOF tournament in the previous game. He does so as a hidden final boss in a special "Nightmare Match" and as an unlockable playable character in the home versions. This is because his ending from the original Real Bout takes place after he has won the tournament. To bring the total number of playable characters up to 23, additional iterations of Andy Bogard, Billy Kane, Blue Mary, and Tung Fu Rue are hidden at various points throughout the game.
